Workshop on the Ethics of Algorithms

Gabbrielle M. Johnson (left) is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College. Johnson’s research interests extend theories of bias beyond individual agents to biases that manifest in other domains including machine learning programs, scientific inference, statistical models of the visual perceptual system, and societal and structural injustices. Johnson will present her paper, “Are Algorithms Value-Free?”

Jenn Stroud Rossmann (right) is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Lafayette College. Rossmann’s research interests include the dynamics of biological fluids in diseased vessels, aneurismal vessels, venous valve disorder, the mechanics of artery walls, respiratory flow in asthmatic airways, as well as the aerodynamics of Wiffle ball and badminton, and the cultural history of technology. Rossmann co-directs the Hanson Center for Inclusive STEM Education, and is an advocate for inclusivity, equity, and interdisciplinarity.
